This report contains vital information about your municipal water supply. Please translate or speak with someone who understands it thoroughly. For questions about this report or the water utility, please contact Gene Leister, Water Treatment Manager at 481-2270 or Johnny Barron, Public Works Director at 481-3518.

We strive to keep all residents informed about their water utility. The Altus Municipal Authority (AMA) manages our water services. AMA meetings are open to the public and held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:40 p.m. in the city council chambers at City Hall, 509 S. Main Street.

Altus Water Treatment personnel regularly monitor water quality in accordance with Federal and local regulations. The table below shows monitoring results from January 1st to December 31st, 2017. All water, including bottled water, reasonably contains at least small amounts of some constituents. It's important to understand that the presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

In the report, you'll find several terms that may be unfamiliar. To help you understand these terms:

  • Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant permitted in municipal water, set as close to MCLGs as possible using the best available treatment technology.
  • Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The contaminant level below which there is no known or expected health risk, allowing for a safety margin.
  • Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU): A measure of water clarity. Turbidity under 5 NTU is typically not visible to the average person.
  • Parts per million (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (mg/l): Represents one unit of substance diluted in one million units of water.
  • Parts per billion (ppb) or Micrograms per liter (ug/l): Represents one unit of substance diluted in one billion units of water.
  • Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM): A group of chlorinated, carbon-based chemicals formed when chlorine reacts with certain organic substances naturally present in surface water.

Altus Municipal Water Report Info

Located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 62 and 283, Altus serves as the county seat of Jackson County, which was originally part of Old Greer County. After the Civil War, cattlemen seeking shorter routes to northern markets used the Great Western Trail near the future town site.

Altus was initially known as Frazer, a small settlement of approximately fifty people situated along Bitter Creek. Cowboys frequently stopped for cold buttermilk at the John McClearan dugout, earning the settlement the local nickname "Buttermilk Station." The Frazer post office was established on February 18, 1886.

On June 4, 1891, a devastating flash flood nearly destroyed Frazer. Residents relocated two-and-a-half miles east to higher ground, and W.R. Baucum suggested renaming the town Altus, a Latin term meaning "high." From July 10, 1901, to May 14, 1904, the town was briefly called Leger, named after a railroad official's father-in-law.

By Oklahoma's statehood in 1907, Altus had 1,927 residents. In 1908, Altus won a spirited contest against Olustee for the county seat, garnering 2,077 votes compared to Olustee's 1,365. The Jackson County Courthouse (listed in the National Register of Historic Places, NR 84003064) was constructed in 1910.

Early newspapers included the Oklahoma Democrat (daily and weekly), the Altus Times (weekly), and the Altus Weekly News. The arrival of railways brought prosperity to the region. By 1930, Altus had developed into a significant regional agricultural trade and distribution center with eight cotton gins, two cotton compresses, and eighteen wholesale businesses.

Since 1942, Altus Air Force Base has served as the city's economic foundation. Other major employers include Jackson County Memorial Hospital and Bar-S Foods Company. The Lugert-Altus Irrigation District, completed in 1947-48, provides water to the local agricultural area, where wheat, cotton, and grain sorghum are cultivated.

Today, Altus continues to thrive as an economic and medical hub for southwest Oklahoma, offering quality education through nine public schools and the Southwest Technology Center. Higher education is available at Western Oklahoma State College. In 1955, Altus was selected as an All American City with the motto "A City with a Future to Share." In September 2013, citizens voted to transition to a Charter (council-manager) form of government.
