Oklahoma Water Utility Companies

We're delighted to present this year's Annual Quality Water Report to you. We strive to keep you informed about the exceptional water and services we've provided throughout the past year. Our ongoing commitment is to deliver safe, reliable municipal water to your home.

Our water supply comes from groundwater drawn from five distinct well fields located in and around Enid. We maintain a source water protection plan (SWAP) available at our office in the Martin Luther King Building at 401 W. Garriott, which indicates medium vulnerability. This plan includes information about potential contamination sources including nitrates and other substances.

We're pleased to confirm that our municipal water meets all Federal and State requirements. If you have questions about this report or your water service, please contact Bruce Boyd at (580) 616-7341. We value our customers and want to ensure you're well-informed about your water utility.

To learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled Enid City Commission meetings held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 401 W. Garriott at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chamber.

The City of Enid continuously monitors contaminants in your water according to Federal and State regulations. Our monitoring results cover January 1st through December 31st, 2017. Some data may be more than a year old, as state regulations allow certain contaminants to be tested less frequently. All municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. It's important to understand that the presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

Enid Municipal Water Report Info

Once known as Skeleton Station, Enid has a fascinating history behind its name. The most credible story begins in 1856 with an Englishman. Alfred Lord Tennyson, writing about King Arthur's legend and his love for Guinevere, published "Idylls of the King" containing a poem titled "Enid" about a beautiful woman second only to Guinevere in beauty.

While traveling by rail from Kansas, M.A. Low, vice president and general counsel for Rock Island, arrived at Skeleton Station and immediately disliked the name. With Tennyson's poetic imagery fresh in his mind, Low renamed the station Enid after the beautiful character. When local Cherokee Strip historian George Rainey researched the town's naming origins in the 1930s, he concluded this was the most factual account.

Another tale suggests pioneers traveling across the plains would stop to eat at a wagon displaying a sign reading "DINE." The sign supposedly flipped upside down, becoming "ENID," though skeptics note the E and D would have appeared backward if truly inverted.

Regardless of which story you believe, the name Enid has Celtic origins referring to "spirit and life" – qualities abundant in today's vibrant community.

Today, Enid serves as Northwest Oklahoma's economic, cultural, medical, political, and educational center. As the region's largest retail trade center, it serves over 200,000 people throughout Northwest Oklahoma and Southwest Kansas. Its diverse economy provides jobs and growth opportunities across multiple sectors.

Oil and agriculture remain vital components of Enid's economy. As home to both Farmland and Johnston Grain Company, Enid boasts the world's third-largest grain storage capacity. Garfield County's fertile soil consistently produces excellent wheat crops while supporting the growing cattle industry. Though oil production has experienced fluctuations, natural gas reserves represent a clean, efficient energy resource with growth potential.

Beyond these traditional industries, Enid has diversified to include food processing, metal fabrication, machine shops, and equipment manufacturing. Vance Air Force Base, celebrating over 50 years of operation, trains elite pilots for the United States Air Force while maintaining strong community relationships.

Retail, services, and healthcare play crucial roles in the local economy. Shopping options range from malls and strip centers to the unique downtown shopping district with its charming town square appeal. Enid's medical community ranks among Oklahoma's most advanced, featuring three modern hospitals and a private psychiatric facility.
