Certain populations may have increased vulnerability to water contaminants compared to the general public. Those with compromised immune systems – including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants – may face higher risks from infections. These vulnerable groups should consult healthcare providers about their municipal water consumption.

Yukon residents benefit from two water sources: groundwater from the Garber-Wellington Aquifer and purchased water from Oklahoma City. The aquifer provides approximately 2.6 million gallons daily to residents. To meet arsenic regulations, Yukon water is blended with Oklahoma City water before distribution. Approximately 60% of Yukon's total water supply comes from Oklahoma City, ensuring compliance with federal standards.
We welcome community involvement at our public forums held on the first and third Tuesdays monthly at 7:30 pm in the C Building (12 S. 5th Street, Yukon, OK). We appreciate presenting our annual water quality report and remain dedicated to delivering high-quality municipal water while addressing regulatory challenges, source protection, conservation, and community education.
Water treatment involves complex processes and careful monitoring. The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminants in public water systems, while FDA regulations set similar standards for bottled water. All drinking water, including bottled varieties, may contain small amounts of certain contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and substances from animal or human activities. Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial Contaminants: viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, or wildlife
- Inorganic Contaminants: salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, or farming
- Pesticides/Herbicides: from various sources including agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic Chemical Contaminants: synthetic and volatile organic compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive Contaminants: naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining

Yukon began in 1891 with approximately 25 residents and has flourished into a vibrant community of around 24,000 people. A.N. Spencer, a Texas cattleman turned railroad developer, established the town while constructing a rail line from El Reno to Arkansas. Noting the absence of towns between El Reno and Oklahoma City along this route, Spencer strategically planned a new settlement.
He purchased land north of present-day Main Street from Luther Morrison and Minnie Taylor, along with two quarter sections south of Main Street from Joseph Carson and his sister Josephine. Busy with railroad construction, Spencer enlisted his brothers L.M., William, and Sam Spencer to assist in developing the town, alongside friends Dan, Sam and George Hogan, J.M. and Joe Farris, and D.S. McEwen.
The earliest structures appeared on Spencer Avenue (now Main Street) near present-day Fourth and Fifth Streets. Building materials had to be transported from El Reno or Oklahoma City via dirt roads along the North Canadian River.
According to the Canadian County Courier (April 1, 1891), Yukon quickly established itself with 25 homes, a bank, real estate offices, restaurants, a lumber yard, hardware store, grocery, livery stable, saloons, a blacksmith shop, printing office, and barber shops within months of A.N. Spencer filing the town plat on February 14, 1891.
The town grew gradually, incorporating in 1901. Municipal services expanded with water, sewer, and electricity from the mill arriving in 1910. Most businesses concentrated on Main Street between Fourth and Fifth until the 1920s. Transportation improved with the interurban railway connecting Oklahoma City to El Reno in 1911, operating until 1940. Street paving began around 1926 with the arrival of Highway 6 through Main Street.
Significant industrial growth came through Yukon Mill and Grain Company, owned by the Kroutils and Dobrys families. From modest beginnings in 1893, by 1915 they were distributing flour and feed products throughout the southern United States and internationally. In the 1930s, the Dobry family established separate operations with Dobry Mills (now owned by Mid-Continent Co-op).
From its humble origins, Yukon has expanded to cover several sections of land with 640 miles of streets, 90 miles of water lines, and 6,400 water meters as of 1991. The education system has grown from a single-room schoolhouse to a comprehensive network including a high school, mid-high, two middle schools, seven elementary schools, and various private and nursery schools, earning recognition as one of Oklahoma's premier school districts.
