Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) are established with strict safety margins. To understand the potential health impacts mentioned, consider that a person would need to consume 2 liters of water daily at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance of experiencing the described health effects.

Remember that all municipal water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains small amounts of impurities. For additional information about contaminants in your tap water and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Municipal Water Hotline: 1-800-426-4791.

Water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and may pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.

Potential contaminants in source water before treatment include:

  • Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from various agricultural and residential applications
  • Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally
  • Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems

Summary: To comply with Federal Safe Municipal Water Act requirements, the City of Sand Springs issues annual reports on water quality monitoring. This report helps residents make informed health decisions and understand their water source and content. For the 2017 calendar year (2018 results forthcoming in 2019), Total Coliform levels remained below established limits. All other detected contaminants were present in trace amounts well below Federal MCLs, posing no significant health concerns.
