About Us
Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems - including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants - face higher risks. These groups should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding their water consumption.
Our water originates from Lake Tenkiller (Tenkiller Ferry), supplying our 2 million gallon daily treatment facility where filtration and disinfection take place. We also purchase water from Van Buren, Arkansas, which comes from Fort Smith Utilities via the Lee Creek Reservoir in Illinois. Additionally, we service an area north of Roland with water purchased from the City of Roland, sourced from their man-made lake.
A resource water assessment report is available at our office (3520 W Cherokee, Sallisaw, OK) and on our website (www.sequoyahwater.com).
All water sources, including bottled water, may contain small amounts of contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Water collects contaminants as it travels through land or underground, including:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals from natural sources or urban runoff
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes and petroleum production
- Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or mining activities
EPA regulations limit contaminants in public water systems, while FDA regulations establish similar protections for bottled water.

The Sequoyah County Water Association began as a vision by concerned community members in 1965, initially formed as the Eastern Oklahoma Water District. After assessing the service area, the Board of Directors incorporated as a non-profit organization in April 1968, officially becoming the Sequoyah County Water Association.
Today, the Association is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors, all Association members. Water service began in April 1971, with the first bill processed in May 1971 when fewer than 1000 customers were connected. Currently, the Association serves approximately 5700 residential customers and supplies water to the Town of Vian and Sequoyah County Rural Water District #5.
Our primary water source is Lake Tenkiller, a reservoir on the Illinois River located about 10.5 miles northwest of Vian, Oklahoma on OSH 100. We operate a treatment facility with a 2.0 million gallon daily capacity. This plant serves the west side of Lake Tenkiller to Greenleaf Lake, south to River Bend Acres, and east to the Akins community.
The eastern portion of our system receives water purchased from Van Buren, Arkansas, which obtains water from Fort Smith's treatment plant at Lee Creek Reservoir. We also buy water from the Town of Roland for the northern area near that community.
Our infrastructure includes nearly 600 miles of distribution lines spanning Sequoyah County north of OSH 64, extending east to the Arkansas border and north to the Cherokee and Adair County lines. We maintain lines in Muskogee County reaching to within 1 mile of Greenleaf Lake on OSH 10 and south to River Bend Acres. Around Lake Tenkiller, we have a small number of lines in Cherokee County serving the Cato Creek area and East Lake Hills Resort.
The Association currently maintains 17 water storage tanks with over 4.5 million gallons capacity and a pumping network consisting of 15 pump stations.
