Recently, the city has transitioned to complete desktop virtualization for all employees as a cost management strategy while providing BYOD flexibility to users. While VDI performs adequately for most applications, it has encountered challenges with more resource-intensive programs, particularly finance applications and video processing.

Video plays a crucial role in Central Point operations, as all police officers and their vehicles are equipped with cameras for continuous video recording. However, latency between host and storage has impaired streaming performance. To resolve this issue, Central Point acquired new array-based storage and implemented PernixData for host-side caching. Unfortunately, this solution still failed to deliver the necessary VDI streaming performance and introduced additional complexity by requiring maintenance of two separate technologies—the array platform and separate host-caching software.

"We're fully committed to VDI because of the numerous benefits it offers our staff, but we needed to address performance issues while also expanding our storage capacity, which we consume rapidly in certain circumstances," explains Jason Richmond, Technology Director at Central Point.
