About Us
The McKenzie River, originating from the pristine waters of Clear Lake in the Cascade Mountain range, is the primary source of Eugene's municipal water. Approximately two decades ago, Eugene Water & Electric Board completed a comprehensive water assessment that identified urban development, stormwater runoff, and hazardous material transportation as key threats to water quality.
In response, EWEB implemented a thorough water source protection program to safeguard the renowned McKenzie River and promote responsible stewardship throughout the watershed. Regular customer surveys consistently highlight the importance residents place on water quality, reinforcing EWEB's commitment to protecting Eugene's sole water supply.
Recently, staff presented a new decade-long strategic plan for water resource protection to the EWEB Board of Commissioners. This plan emphasizes water quality monitoring, hazardous spill emergency response protocols, urban runoff mitigation strategies, and riparian forest conservation efforts to protect this vital resource.
EWEB's protection team collaborates closely with experts at the Hayden Bridge Water Purification Plant to monitor water quality "from source to tap," analyzing long-term trends and optimizing treatment processes. The 10-year protection strategy prioritizes investments in the lower McKenzie Watershed near east Springfield, where threats from urban development and potential contamination are highest.
The utility has recently implemented an advanced emergency response system to help first responders address watershed spills effectively. EWEB also partners with community organizations to enhance wetlands and forests along the river, which naturally filter pollutants and provide resilience against climate-related flooding and drought conditions.
We continue our collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies on initiatives designed to preserve water quality and increase public awareness about watershed health. We're fortunate to have exceptional water quality in our region, and we remain dedicated to maintaining this standard.
