Pioneer William "Bud" Wilson established the first claim and built the initial log cabin in 1868 where Ellensburg now stands. Farmers A.J. Splawn and Ben Burch relocated a 14 x 18 hewn log house nearby to open as a store in 1870. Young settler John Gillispie created a sign for the establishment, naming it "Robber's Roost." With sparse settlement, the trading post relied on exchanging furs and horses with Native Americans for supplies.
In 1872, John A. Shoudy purchased the store and 160 acres of land. A Civil War veteran, he had visited the valley in 1871 as part of his Seattle family's plan to improve road connections to Yakima country. John established postal service in Ellensburgh in 1873. He and his wife Mary Ellen platted the town, officially recording it in April 1875, naming it Ellensburgh after his wife.
Between 1878 and 1883, the community experienced significant growth. A bank was established, Hook and Ladder Company Number 1 organized, and the first newspaper, Kittitas Localizer, began publication on July 12, 1883. With 2,768 residents, it became the county seat of newly-formed Kittitas County. The City of Ellensburgh was initially incorporated on November 26, 1883, under a territorial act effective January 1, 1884.
