The Department of Public Works manages the support and operation of public roads, bridges, waterways, and the County's Fleet Department throughout Hernando County. Their mission is to maintain safe, quality transportation infrastructure for residents and travelers.
Currently, this includes maintaining 1,141.93 miles of paved roads ranging from residential neighborhoods to urban arterials, plus 504.22 miles of unpaved roads. The department also oversees 19 bridges, more than 119 traffic control signals, educational signs, roadway striping, and rights-of-way maintenance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Drainage – maintaining county-owned drainage ducts, catch basins, swales, and retention ponds
- Rights-of-Way (ROWs) Mowing – operating on a 6-8 week cutting cycle under normal conditions
- Right of Way Permits/Inspections – reviewing and approving all work in county rights-of-way
- Asphalt Maintenance – repairing potholes, driveways, and sidewalks
- Grading – maintaining lime rock roads, base repairs, and preparing roads for MSBU projects
- Waterways management – including navigational aids, dock maintenance, and debris removal
- Fleet management – coordinating vehicle and equipment inventory throughout the county
