About Us
Our municipal water originates from one of Florida's largest freshwater reserves, the Floridan Aquifer. This vast underground reservoir lies beneath much of the state and is primarily replenished through rainfall that filters naturally through hundreds of feet of rock and sand layers.
The groundwater from this source typically maintains excellent quality, requiring only chlorine disinfection before distribution to our customers. In 2017, the Department of Environmental Protection conducted a Source Water Assessment on our system to evaluate potential contamination risks near our wells.
The assessment identified eleven potential contamination sources for our two systems, all with moderate susceptibility levels. These include underground petroleum storage tanks and specially delineated areas. To view complete assessment results, visit the FDEP Source Water Assessment and Protection Program website at www.dep.state.fl.us/swap, or contact Duane Land at (352) 241-0178.
Various substances may be present in source water including:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, or agricultural activities
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants, either naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining operations
