Florida Water Utility Companies

Where Does Our Municipal Water Come From? Our water is sourced from the Floridan Aquifer, one of America's most substantial freshwater reserves. This aquifer extends beneath much of Florida and is primarily recharged by rainfall that filters through layers of rock and sand. The groundwater quality is typically excellent, requiring only chlorine disinfection before distribution to customers.

Source Water Assessment: In 2017, Florida's Department of Environmental Protection conducted a Source Water Assessment of our system to identify potential contamination sources near our wells. Eleven potential contamination sources were identified with moderate susceptibility levels, including underground petroleum storage tanks and designated areas of concern. You can access assessment results at the FDEP Source Water Assessment and Protection Program website (www.dep.state.fl.us/swapp) or contact Duane Land at (352) 241-0178.

Substances That May Be Present in Source Water: Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.

Potential contaminants include:

  • Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, either naturally occurring or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that may occur naturally
