  1. Is Fluoride added to MAWC water? MAWC does not add fluoride to water produced at our three treatment plants. However, water received from Greater Johnstown Water Authority for the Ligonier service area does contain fluoride.
  2. Why does the water have a "chlorine" odor in winter? MAWC adds chlorine to prevent waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and giardiasis. The chlorine must remain throughout its journey to your tap. In summer, MAWC combines ammonia with chlorine to maintain chlorine levels while reducing taste and odor issues caused by warmer water. In winter, only chlorine is added to eliminate free ammonia that could cause bacterial growth, creating the noticeable odor.
  3. Can I remove the chlorine taste from my water? Yes, refrigerate a glass of water for fresh-tasting water anytime. Chlorine naturally dissipates over time. Reverse osmosis and activated carbon filters effectively remove chlorine, but choose reputable products and follow manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
  4. Why does my tap water sometimes look cloudy initially and then clear up? The cloudiness comes from tiny air bubbles, similar to carbonation in soft drinks. Eventually, these bubbles rise and disappear. This occurs more frequently during winter months when colder water holds more dissolved air. Air can also enter pipes after repairs or service disruptions. Contact customer service for a main line flush if excessive air persists after repairs.
  5. What causes "pink slime" in my shower? This isn't from the water supply. Certain airborne bacteria thrive in moist environments like showers, toilet bowls, sink drains, tiles, and pet dishes. These naturally occurring organisms may be unappealing but are generally harmless. Regular cleaning with Lysol or chlorine-based products prevents bacterial film buildup.
  6. What are the black spots or rings in bathrooms? These are mold and mildew growths that develop in consistently damp areas and should be treated similarly to the pink slime issue.
