About Us
The Town of Herndon is proud to present our 2017 Annual Municipal Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). This report provides valuable information about your water source, its contents, and how it compares to standards established by regulatory agencies.
Our primary goal is to provide Herndon residents with safe, reliable water while keeping you informed about our ongoing water protection efforts. The quality of our municipal water meets strict state and federal requirements administered by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).
If you have questions about this report or would like additional information about any aspect of your water supply, please contact Mike Farr, Utility Manager, at the Department of Public Works at 703-435-6800, ext. 2153. Para información en español, por favor llame a Robert Farr del División de Obras Publicas al(703) 435-6800, ext. 2153. Este informe contiene información importante sobre la calidad de su agua potable.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION OPPORTUNITIES
Ordinances regarding water quality and distribution are discussed at Town Council hearings. Council work sessions and regular meetings occur twice monthly on Wednesday evenings except during December, June, July, and August, when Council meets once for work and once for regular session. Please consult the town calendar for specific dates and times.
WATER SOURCES
Herndon purchases treated water from Fairfax Water, which draws from two primary sources: the Potomac River and the Occoquan Reservoir. Treatment facilities located at opposite ends of Fairfax County feed an interconnected distribution system. The James M. Corbalis Jr. Treatment Plant in northern Fairfax County processes Potomac River water, while the Frederick G. Griffith Jr. Treatment Plant near the southern border processes Occoquan Reservoir water. Due to Herndon's northern location in Fairfax County, our water primarily came from the Corbalis treatment plant during 2017.
SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT
Under federal Safe Drinking Water Act provisions, states must develop comprehensive source-water assessment programs that identify watersheds supplying public tap water, provide information on contamination risks, and assess susceptibility to contamination. The Virginia Department of Health has conducted these assessments and determined that both the Potomac River and Occoquan Reservoir have high susceptibility to contamination, similar to other surface water sources throughout Virginia. The assessment report is available by contacting Fairfax Water at 703-698-5600 or at www.fairfaxwater.org/water/swap.htm.
