About Us
All Municipal Water May Contain Contaminants
To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for bottled water contaminants to provide equivalent public health protection. Municipal water, including bottled varieties, can reasonably be expected to contain at least minimal amounts of certain impurities. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
For additional information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Municipal Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
Important Health Information
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. People with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly persons, and infants—may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek advice about municipal water from healthcare providers.
Guidelines from the U.S. EPA/CDC on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Municipal Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791 or http://water.epa.gov/drink/hotline.
Lead and Municipal Water
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health complications, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in municipal water primarily comes from materials and components in service lines and home plumbing. While Indian Wells Valley Water District provides high-quality municipal water, we cannot control materials used in plumbing fixtures.
When water sits unused for several hours, minimize potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption or cooking. If concerned about lead content, consider having your water tested. Information about lead in municipal water, testing methods, and exposure reduction is available from the Safe Municipal Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
