About Us
The City of Jackson is proud to present the 2017 Annual Water Quality Report for all City of Jackson customers, including Blackman Township and the State Prison of Southern Michigan. This report has been developed to provide you with essential information about your water quality in compliance with Federal requirements.
State and Federal regulations require regular water testing to ensure safety. We successfully met all monitoring and reporting requirements for 2017. As you'll see in this report, our municipal water meets or exceeds all government standards for quality and safety.
Where Your Water Comes From
Jackson's water system draws from groundwater pumped from sixteen wells located in two separate well fields. This dual-source approach ensures reliable water supply even if one field becomes compromised. Water travels from these wells to our treatment facility where we use a lime/soda ash process to reduce hardness from 475 parts per million (ppm) to approximately 140 ppm. The water then undergoes filtration and disinfection before storage in our 7.5 million gallon reservoir and distribution to customers.
Source Water Assessment
Michigan conducted a source water assessment in 2003 to determine contamination susceptibility. Our source received a "moderately high" rating on the seven-tier scale ranging from "very low" to "very high." To address this, Jackson participates in a countywide Wellhead Protection Program that identifies groundwater recharge areas, potential contaminant sources, and implements protective measures.
Lead Information
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health issues, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from service lines and household plumbing components. While we provide high-quality water, we cannot control materials used in plumbing fixtures. If water has been sitting for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. Those concerned about lead can request water testing. More information is available at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
Health Information
Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly, and infants may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers about drinking water. Guidelines on reducing Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminant risks are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain small amounts of certain contaminants. This doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

Jackson Drinking Water Company and EPAJackson Water Report Information
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activity.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, industrial wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that can occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining
The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure drinking water safety. Similarly, FDA regulations set contaminant limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.
