Lacey Water Department
About Us
Lacey initiated its Wellhead Protection Program in 1995 to safeguard groundwater quality from contamination through land use and community activities. This initiative is vital because all of Lacey's water—and most of Thurston County's drinking supply—comes from underground sources.
Groundwater can become contaminated when hazardous substances percolate through soil layers and reach our underground aquifers. Each well is surrounded by a Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA) that indicates the time required for groundwater to travel through the aquifer to reach the wellhead. In areas marked with color-coding, groundwater may take up to five years to move through the aquifer before reaching municipal wells.
Residents can help protect our water supply through proper handling, storage and disposal of potentially harmful substances, especially within designated WHPAs. To report water leaks or concerns, please call (360) 491-5644.
