About Us
Testing Requirements Once again we are proud to report that in 2017 the water quality in Lemont met all United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) municipal water requirements and standards. This year, as in previous years, your tap water was tested according to federal and state water health requirements.
The Lemont Public Works Department vigilantly safeguards the Village's groundwater supply and works diligently to continue providing the highest quality water possible. The USEPA requires all communities to provide their customers with an annual Consumer Confidence Report on their system's water quality. This report summarizes the quality of water we provided over the past year.
Our water system consists of approximately 98 miles of looped water main. Four deep wells and one shallow emergency well deliver an average of 2,500,000 gallons of water daily to residents. These wells can pump 4,250 gallons per minute or over 6,500,000 gallons each day. Two elevated storage tanks and one ground reservoir can store up to 1,600,000 gallons of water.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining
All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
The USEPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set limits for bottled water. Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population, including those with compromised immune systems, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants.
For source water assessment information or to view a summary of the completed Source Water Assessments, visit the Illinois EPA website at http://www.epa.state.il.us/cgi-bin/wp/swap-fact-sheets.pl. The IEPA has determined that Lemont Community Water Supply has a low susceptibility to contamination based on well monitoring data and hydrogeological barriers that prevent viral movement.
