SOURCE OF OUR WATER SUPPLY

Generally, Lockport's municipal water comes from the East Branch of the Niagara River, a source considered excellent in both quantity and quality according to Niagara County Health Department standards. Throughout 2017, our system experienced no restrictions on water availability.

WATER TREATMENT PROCESS

At the Raw Water Pumping Station (built 1968), chlorine is added for disinfection and zebra mussel control. This raw water travels 13 miles through a 30-inch main to the Lockport Water Treatment Plant at 220 Summit St. The facility employs conventional methods including:

  • Coagulation and sedimentation to remove dirt particles
  • Filtration to eliminate fine organic and inorganic materials
  • Chlorination for ongoing disinfection
  • Fluoridation to help prevent dental cavities

SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT

The New York State Department of Health completed a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) for our raw water supply. This assessment identified potential contamination concerns but does not address the safety of treated tap water. The Great Lakes watershed is extensive, making comprehensive analysis challenging. Primary concerns include storm-generated turbidity, wastewater impacts, toxic sediments, and transport-related spills.

Our assessment revealed increased susceptibility to contamination due to residential land use patterns, which may contribute to microbial contamination, disinfection byproduct precursors, turbidity and pesticides. The high density of sanitary wastewater discharges also presents concerns. Additional contamination risks come from Chemical Bulk Storage facilities, Inactive Hazardous Waste Sites, Landfills, and Toxic Release Inventory sources.
