Long Beach City

The City of Long Beach draws its municipal water supply from eight groundwater wells that tap into the Lloyd aquifer beneath Long Island. The water quality from this aquifer is generally rated good to excellent.

To ensure tap water safety, both state and EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, the State Health Department and FDA establish standards for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. In 2017, Long Beach served approximately 35,000 residents, pumping nearly 997 million gallons of water with about 83.5% directly billed to consumers.

Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.

Potential contaminants include:

• Microbial pollutants
• Inorganic contaminants
• Nitrogen-based herbicides
• Organic chemical substances
• Radioactive elements

The Park Place treatment facility improves water quality through several processes:

• Oxygenation to transform iron into a removable state
• Lime addition to adjust pH and reduce pipe corrosion
• Alum addition to enhance coagulation
• Sedimentation for iron removal
• Filtration to capture remaining iron
• Minimal chlorination for distribution system safety

Under state regulations, Long Beach regularly tests for over 135 parameters multiple times annually, conducting more than 5,000 tests on distribution systems and supply wells each year. The table on page 3 of our annual report shows which substances were detected in your water. Many parameters occur naturally in Long Island water and pose no adverse health effects.
