Lomita Water Department
About Us
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) is a coalition of twenty-six cities and water districts that supplies water to nearly nineteen million residents across Southern California, including Western Basin Municipal Water District (WBMWD) from which Lomita purchases treated water.
MWD provides the City with water processed at the Weymouth Treatment Plant. The majority of this water travels along the 242-mile Colorado River Aqueduct. Some water also originates from Northern California rivers that feed into the State Water Project's 444-mile California Aqueduct.
The treatment facility employs traditional methods including coagulation with aluminum sulfate, which causes contaminants to form large particles that settle in sedimentation basins. The water then undergoes filtration through coal and sand. Chloramine disinfection (a combination of chlorine and ammonia) eliminates remaining microorganisms and maintains water safety during distribution.
In December 2002, MWD completed a source water assessment of its Colorado River and State Water Project supplies. Colorado River water faces vulnerability from recreation, urban runoff, increasing watershed development, and wastewater. State Water Project supplies are most vulnerable to urban runoff, wildlife activity, agriculture, recreation, and sewage. Assessment copies are available by contacting MWD at (213) 217-6850.
The Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD) manages groundwater for approximately 400,000 residents across 43 cities in southern Los Angeles County. The City maintains one groundwater well (Well No. 5) with a production capacity of 1,500 gallons per minute and holds adjudicated rights to 1,352 acre-feet of groundwater.
A 2014 assessment identified the City's groundwater well as vulnerable to several contamination sources, including auto repair facilities, gas stations, dry cleaners, landfills, and various chemical/industrial activities. For assessment copies, contact the State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water at 500 North Central Avenue, Suite 500, Glendale, CA 91203 or call (818) 551-2004.
