The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has conducted a thorough assessment of water sources supplying each public water system, including Longport Water Department. This evaluation aims to measure susceptibility to contamination rather than actual contaminant levels in your tap water.

The assessment of Longport Water Department included:

  • Identifying the source water assessment area that provides municipal water to your system
  • Inventorying potential contamination sources within this area
  • Analyzing vulnerability factors of the water supply

DEP evaluated all public water systems against eight contamination categories, with susceptibility rankings of Low (L), Moderate (M), or High (H). These ratings consider both water source sensitivity and contaminant presence frequency.

Key factors affecting your water quality include:

  • Geological features and well depth (deeper wells typically have better protection)
  • Land use surrounding the water source (industrial, agricultural, or residential activities)
  • Fertilizer usage intensity in surrounding areas
  • Proximity to contaminated sites, underground storage tanks, and landfills

Your annual Consumer Confidence Report contains critical information about water quality test results as required by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.

Longport Water Department Municipal Water Report Information

Longport occupies the southern tip of Absecon Island, encompassing approximately half a square mile of land area surrounded by water - the sound on the northwest coast and the Atlantic Ocean on the southeast coast. According to local historian and Mayor Michael Cohen's book "Longport-The Way We Were," the first documented private landowner was Thomas Budd, who settled a claim against the Lord Proprietors of New Jersey in 1695.

Budd received 1,500 acres of land, with a significant portion located on Absecon Island. He later sold most of the property at just four cents per acre. In 1854, Samuel Overshine purchased a parcel containing dunes at the southwestern end of the island for $130, selling a portion to Isaac Barton for $10 that same year. Three years later, Barton traded what was known as Lot 32 to James Long for $2,000 plus land in Arkansas.

Long held the property for years as its value increased in both worth and size, growing by more than a mile in length due to sand accumulation from erosion updrift from Atlantic City between 1870-1880. Though he never initially developed the land, Long later returned to purchase an entire block between 12th and 13th streets, building an oceanfront home called "Await A-Wee." By the century's turn, this house was sold and converted to a sanatorium before being destroyed by a storm in 1914.
