WATER ADJUSTMENT POLICY
Madison County Water Department has implemented changes to the water billing adjustment policy. These changes align our policy with other regional water providers, ensure more efficient and consistent billing adjustments, and reduce fraudulent claims. This policy is fair to all customers, especially those who never request adjustments yet indirectly subsidize those who do.
- Strict enforcement of one adjustment per year per customer. Exceptions apply for customers who relocate.
- Customer's bill must be at least triple their yearly average. For leaks, customers are responsible for charges up to triple their monthly average, with adjustments covering the difference.
- Minimum refund amount must be $10.00.
- Customers must provide repair or parts receipts as proof of leak repair. No exceptions if evidence isn't provided.
- Customer service representatives no longer approve leak adjustments. All adjustments require department manager review and approval.
HOW TO CHECK FOR LEAKS USING YOUR METER
Ensure no water is running in your home (including toilets, ice makers, washing machines). With all water off, check your meter for dial movement. If the dial moves clockwise when no water is being used, you have a leak. Once confirmed, contact a plumber or make repairs yourself. The Madison County Water Department is not responsible for lines from the meter to your residence.
CONSERVATION TIPS
Every Drop Counts! A faucet leaking one drop per second wastes 2,400 gallons annually. To check for toilet tank leaks, add food coloring to the tank, wait 15 minutes, and check the bowl. Colored water in the bowl indicates a leak.
DRY WEATHER WATER CONSERVATION TIPS
Drought conditions increase water usage, resulting in lower pressure for some customers. Please use water consciously and help conserve. Some outdoor conservation tips:
- Water lawns only when necessary - 660 gallons supplies 1,000 square feet with 1 inch of water (equivalent to a week's indoor usage)
- Established lawns typically need watering only every 5-7 days
- Water early morning or evening to reduce evaporation by 30% or more
- Adjust sprinklers to prevent watering streets, driveways or walkways
- Cut grass at recommended heights to encourage deeper roots and better moisture retention
- Avoid over-fertilizing, which increases water needs
- Use mulch around plants and trees to retain soil moisture
- Use brooms instead of hoses for cleaning driveways and walkways
- Use shut-off nozzles on hoses to control water flow
- Don't leave sprinklers unattended
- When washing vehicles, park on grass and use hoses with automatic shut-off nozzles
