Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Southside Water Works Drinking Water Company and CDC- What do I do if I suspect that sewage is backing up into my home? Check toilets and tubs on the lowest level of your home first. If only these are backing up, call the Authority immediately at 215-295-8181. Our business hours are Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm. Outside office hours, please call the Sewage Treatment Plant at 215-736-0018. We'll check the main sewer line and fix any blockages promptly. If the main line is flowing normally, the issue likely lies in your home's plumbing or connecting lateral line, which is the customer's responsibility.
- What should I do about suspected poor water quality? First, gather helpful information: Does running cold water for 5 minutes improve the quality? Is the issue visible in a clear glass? Is it present at multiple taps? Do you have a home filter system needing maintenance? When did you last drain your hot water heater? Iron and rust accumulation can enter your plumbing without regular flushing. Contact the Authority, as emergency repairs or routine flushing might be happening in your area.
- Are there requirements before selling my home? Your water meter needs reading prior to sale for accurate final billing. Call to schedule this visit. Final Tenant Inspections are mandatory for all rental properties.
- Where is your office located? Morrisville Borough Hall, 35 Union Street, Morrisville, PA 19067.
- What are your office hours? Monday through Friday, 8am – 4pm, except on holidays (New Years Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving & Christmas Day).
- How is my water bill calculated? Water meters are read quarterly. The Morrisville Authority bills a minimum fee for the first 5,000 gallons of water and sewer per quarter, plus additional usage (over 5,000 gallons) at established rates per thousand gallons, with a $2.00 quarterly meter fee.
- When is a bill considered late and what's the penalty? Bills are due within 30 days, with a 10% penalty on unpaid balances thereafter.
- What's the average water bill amount? Due to varying individual consumption needs, this question cannot be answered precisely.
- How do I transfer billing when selling my home? The closing title company should contact our office at least one week before closing. We'll obtain a meter reading for a final bill provided to your title company for payment at closing.
- Why can't bills go directly to my tenant who's responsible for payment? While we can send copies to tenants, accounts must remain in the owner's name. Unlike other utilities, water departments can place liens on properties for unpaid bills. You should forward bills to tenants promptly or add them to our records for billing copies.
- Why do I receive bills when away for extended periods with no water usage? As long as your property has a meter, you'll receive minimum bills regardless of usage. For absences exceeding three months, having water service temporarily disconnected may be financially advantageous.
- What causes occasional water discoloration? Rust and mineral deposits can accumulate in water mains, typically remaining dormant until flow disruptions like nearby fires, main breaks, or hydrant flushing disturb them. While unappealing, this sediment isn't hazardous to health.
- What should I do when experiencing water discoloration? Contact the Morrisville Municipal Authority to help determine the cause. After resolution, run cold water taps to clear your lines and avoid doing laundry during this period.
