Marshfield Utilities is proud to present this year's Annual Municipal Water Consumer Confidence Report. This document aims to inform you about the quality of water and services we provide daily. Our mission is to deliver safe, dependable water to all our customers.

We want residents to understand our ongoing efforts to enhance water treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources. We remain dedicated to ensuring your water meets the highest quality standards.

Our water comes entirely from groundwater sources, drawn from 15 active production wells situated across six well fields in and around Marshfield. Our infrastructure includes four booster pumping stations, five storage reservoirs, a water treatment facility, and approximately 144 miles of water transmission and distribution lines.

Marshfield Utilities maintains a comprehensive source water protection plan (Well Head Protection Plan) available at our office, which provides detailed information about potential contamination sources. We're happy to report that our municipal water meets all federal and state requirements.

Marshfield Utilities continuously monitors your water according to Federal and state regulations. The table on the reverse side shows our monitoring results from January 1 to December 31, 2017. All water, including bottled water, naturally contains small amounts of various substances. It's important to understand that the presence of these substances doesn't necessarily pose health risks.

Marshfield Utilities Municipal Water Report Information

The earliest recorded inhabitants of the Menominee River Basin were a small Algonquin tribe known as "the wild rice people." Journals from 17th and early 18th century explorers describe a tribe of forty to eighty men living in a single village at the Menominee River mouth.

By the 1820s, the Menominee population had grown to approximately 500 men distributed across twelve villages throughout Wisconsin. Between 1670 and the early 1800s, various settlers, fur traders, and missionaries visited the area as they traveled along the waterways of Green Bay and the Menominee River.

The first known white settler on the Menominee River was Stanislaus Chappu (or Chappee), a French-Canadian fur trader who operated a log trading post at the site of Marinette between 1794 and 1824. Another fur trader, William Farnsworth, arrived in the Menominee River Basin in 1822. Two years later, with help from nearby Chippewa Indians, he forcibly expelled Chappee from his trading post and took over the area's fur trading business.

Farnsworth and his Native American common-law wife, Marinette (after whom the city is believed to be named), operated the trading business from the log post for many years. Marinette, sometimes referred to as Queen Marinette, developed considerable skill in managing the fur trading operation and eventually took primary responsibility for the business as Farnsworth began pursuing other interests.

Farnsworth later partnered with Charles Brush in a business venture that marked the beginning of a new industry that would dominate the Menominee River Basin for the next fifty years. In 1832, the partners constructed a hydraulic sawmill at the foot of what is now North Raymond Street.
