About Us
Municipal water sources include rivers, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and potentially radioactive materials. Water may also pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.
Our system draws water from the Surficial aquifer which is then blended with water from our Reverse Osmosis Treatment Plant that sources from the Floridan aquifer. Martin County Utilities conducts regular monitoring for contaminants following strict federal and state guidelines.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. Similarly, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) establishes limits for bottled water. All water, including bottled varieties, may contain at least small amounts of some contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Lead Concerns: Elevated lead levels can pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in water typically comes from service line materials and home plumbing components. While Martin County Utilities provides quality water, we cannot control plumbing materials in homes. If water has been sitting for several hours, reduce potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption. ABOUT MARTIN COUNTY: Martin County is one of Florida's 67 counties, established by the Florida Legislature in 1925. It was named after John W. Martin, who served as Florida's Governor from 1925 to 1929.
The Martin County Board of County Commissioners provides governmental functions through authority granted by Florida's Constitution. Five Commissioners serve four-year staggered terms, each elected county-wide but representing specific geographic regions. The Board selects a Chairperson annually to oversee meetings, which occur several Tuesdays monthly and remain open to the public.
The Commission oversees essential public services (fire/rescue, libraries, building inspections), infrastructure development (roads, utilities, parks), and establishes zoning and land use regulations. They determine the millage rate (property tax) that funds county operations, excluding the Tax Collector and most court functions.
As a policy-making body, the Board approves operating and capital budgets, passes ordinances, and takes actions promoting the health, safety, and welfare of Martin County residents.
