The City of Miamisburg obtains its municipal water from the Great Miami River Hidden Valley Aquifer System. The utility currently operates five production wells that draw water from the Aquifer for processing at the Water Treatment Facility. These wells are strategically positioned around the land near the Great Miami River.

Groundwater is transported to the Treatment Center where it undergoes chemical oxidation to remove iron and manganese, followed by filtration, chlorine disinfection, and fluoridation before distribution to customers. Water from Miamisburg's Treatment Facility typically measures 22 grains per gallon (376 mg/L) in hardness, primarily due to calcium and magnesium minerals.

During 2016, the facility processed an average of 2.32 million gallons daily. The city maintains emergency connections with West Carrollton and Montgomery County, though these weren't utilized in 2016.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a source water assessment for Miamisburg's water supply and determined the aquifer has high contamination susceptibility. This assessment is based on several factors:

• Absence of protective clay layers above the aquifer
• Shallow depth of the upper aquifer (less than 15 feet below ground)
• Presence of significant potential contaminant sources nearby
• Existing manmade contaminants detected in the aquifer

Notably, 1,1,1-Trichloroethane, Tetrachloroethene, and Trichloroethene were identified in raw water samples. Miamisburg has implemented a comprehensive source water protection plan to prevent additional contamination. This Ohio EPA-endorsed plan includes educational initiatives, a citizen committee, strategic controls, emergency response protocols, groundwater monitoring, industrial facility inspections, and protective zoning regulations. Additionally, the city utilizes monitoring wells throughout Miamisburg to detect potential groundwater pollutants.

Why am I charged Availability Fees on vacant property?

When water or wastewater lines are within one hundred feet of your property, State Statute allows the District to assess an Availability Fee. These funds can only be used for retiring Municipal bonds issued to finance major infrastructure improvements. Once your property connects to the water or wastewater system, the Availability Fee is replaced by standard service charges.

Why do I receive a water bill when I'm not using any water?

Properties with existing water meters incur minimum monthly service fees regardless of usage. These charges help cover meter reading costs, billing operations, and water distribution system maintenance.

My water usage seems unusually high. What could cause this?

Excessive water consumption often results from undetected leaks. Even a tiny leak (1/16th inch diameter) can waste approximately 24,667 gallons monthly! Outdoor irrigation also significantly increases water usage. We strongly recommend registering for our FREE AquaHawk leak alert system. Water conservation resources and landscaping materials are available at our District office.

What steps should I take if I suspect a water leak?

If you suspect a leak, register with AquaHawk to monitor your usage patterns. This Automated Meter Reading Technology allows both you and District staff to view account history and current consumption. AquaHawk may help identify potential issues. Our office can provide additional troubleshooting tips at 970-731-2691. Please note: District technicians cannot enter your home to locate leaks.

What are my payment options?

We offer automatic bank drafts and online payment options. Payments can also be made at our District office at 100 Lyn Ave during business hours, or at either TBK Bank branch with your payment stub.

How do I update or combine property lots?

Contact either the Town of Pagosa Springs (970-264-4151) or Archuleta County Planning Department (970-264-5851) depending on jurisdiction. Provide the District with the recorded Resolution or Replat to adjust your billing accordingly.

What's the process when selling my property?

For transactions through a title company, the District receives automatic notification after recording. The title company handles any pro-ration of current charges between you and the buyers. For private sales without a title company, bring the recorded deed to the District office.

How do I update my billing address?

Can bills be sent directly to me as a tenant?

While property owners remain ultimately responsible for water/wastewater bills, statements can be sent directly to tenants with owner permission. Property Owners can submit the Tenant Request Form to redirect billing statements.

What are the pH and hardness levels in Miamisburg water?

The eastern/downtown area, typically served by the Snowball Water Treatment Plant, has an average pH of 8.6 and hardness measuring approximately 92 grains/gallon or 33 milligrams/liter. The western portion including Pagosa Lakes, served by the Hatcher and San Juan Treatment Plants, has an average pH of 8.2 with hardness around 8.72 grains/gallon or 150 milligrams/liter. The San Juan facility operates only during peak demand periods.
