About Us
The Xenia Municipal Water Treatment Plant (WTP) specializes in iron and manganese removal to prevent household staining issues. The treatment process includes three key stages:
Aeration: Groundwater undergoes aeration to eliminate natural hydrogen sulfide and introduce oxygen, which combines with iron and manganese ions.
Filtration: Iron and manganese compounds precipitate in gravity-fed filters, effectively removing these elements from your water supply.
Disinfection: Water is chlorinated and treated with a phosphate solution to prevent pipe corrosion and control metals in the distribution system.
Important to note: The Xenia WTP does not soften water. Local water is considered very "hard" at approximately 400 mg/L (23 grains per gallon). Additionally, fluoride is not added—natural fluoride levels are only about 20% of the therapeutic dose (1 mg/L) recommended for dental health.
Special Health Considerations: Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants, including those with compromised immune systems (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients), some elderly residents, and infants. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about their municipal water consumption. The EPA and CDC provide guidelines on reducing infection risks from waterborne contaminants through their Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
