About Us
This brochure provides an overview of the water quality we supplied last year. It includes details about water sources, potential contaminants, and how our water compares to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state standards.
We're committed to transparency because informed residents are our greatest allies. We encourage you to attend our regularly scheduled public meetings to learn more about our water system improvements. For additional information, please contact Dan Kistler at 775-782-5976.
Our water comes from groundwater sources. As water travels through ground layers, it dissolves natural minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activities. The Safe Drinking Water Act requires states to develop Source Water Assessments to identify potential contamination sources. Nevada has completed this assessment; for results, please contact us.
Important Health Information from the EPA:
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. This includes people undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, elderly individuals, and infants. These groups should seek specific advice from healthcare providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risk from microorganisms like Cryptosporidium are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
All water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Water Testing and Monitoring:
Our system tests at least 5 monthly samples for microbiological contaminants under the Total Coliform Rule. While coliform bacteria are typically harmless, their presence can indicate disease-causing bacteria. Follow-up testing determines if harmful bacteria exist when coliforms are detected.
We monitor arsenic levels through seven sampling points near Wells #7 and #8. The EPA's maximum contaminant level (MCL) is 10 ppb. A January 2015 reading showed 16 ppb with a running annual average of 9.25 ppb. Lower winter flows in Well #8 tend to increase arsenic concentrations. We're investigating compliance options, including shutting off these wells during low-demand seasons.

Minden stands out as a unique town in Nevada and possibly across the United States. It was meticulously planned and mapped before construction began, with perfectly arranged streets guiding development during its first fifty years. Since the 1920s, new subdivisions have altered the town's symmetrical pattern, but quality and civic pride remain hallmarks of the community.
Historical Transportation:
Historical records indicate that the Virginia and Truckee Railway's 1906 terminus location catalyzed Minden's establishment. Track laying from Carson City into Carson Valley began in late 1905. Public perception at the time suggested the railroad would reach Gardnerville and potentially extend to Bodie, with a possible branch to Alpine County.
Name Origin:
The town was named after Minden, Germany, near H.F. Dangberg's birthplace. The Dangberg Company developed the town, submitting plans to Douglas County Commissioners in July 1906. Minden's core developed between 1906 and approximately 1940.
Growth and Development:
During its early years, the Minden Inn became a retreat destination for Hollywood celebrities including Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. Small subdivisions emerged in the late 1950s, while commercial enterprises expanded along Highway 395. Significant growth occurred from the mid-1970s onward, with major subdivisions and new businesses creating a development pattern that continues today.
The local newspaper Record-Courier described the new town in 1909: "An ideal location with natural drainage in all directions makes this a perfect townsite. Though population remains modest, high-quality cottages are being built. The town already boasts substantial resources including a railroad, flour mill, creamery, wool warehouse, stockyards, and general store, with a hotel and bank under construction."
Minden has evolved significantly since 1906 and continues to develop today. We appreciate your visit to the Town of Minden website and welcome your questions about our community.
