Well Head Protection Program
A well head protection plan was voluntarily developed by Missouri American Water's Warrensburg District in 2009 and updated in 2013 with endorsement from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. This program demonstrates the company's commitment to protecting water resources through proactive programs and community involvement.
Protecting Water Quality at the Source
We can all help protect tap water quality by first safeguarding our rivers and watersheds. When rain or snow falls, water travels across the ground collecting pollutants from lawns, streets, and farmland before reaching waterways. Here are six simple ways to reduce pollution and protect our water sources:
- Recycle properly and avoid littering
- Remember storm drains connect to rivers – don't pour oil or chemicals in streets
- Plant native vegetation that requires no fertilizers or herbicides
- Use lawn chemicals sparingly and follow directions
- Install rain gardens to capture runoff
- Join local stream cleanup efforts
Special Health Information
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants in tap water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons, such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants may face higher risks from infections. These people should seek advice from healthcare providers about their tap water consumption.
If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water typically comes from materials and components in service lines and home plumbing. Missouri American Water is responsible for providing high-quality water but cannot control materials used in household plumbing components.

A Rich History Since 1833
Warrensburg's story begins in 1833 when Martin Warren, a metalworker from Kentucky, settled along the Osage Indian Trail. Warren's lodge and smithy became the community's gathering place. In 1836, his settlement was designated as the county seat for the newly created Johnson County, named "Warren's Burg" in his honor. In 1855, it was officially incorporated as the City of Warrensburg.
When the railroad arrived in 1864, a new business district developed five blocks southeast of the original town along the tracks. Visitors can explore Warrensburg's history at the original town square (302 N Main), featuring the 1838 Johnson County Courthouse, Mary Miller Smyser Heritage Library and Museum, Elm School, and the Culp Building. This historical complex, maintained by the Johnson County Historical Society, hosts the annual Old Drum Day Festival and various cultural events.
The Old Drum Trial
The 1838 Courthouse at 302 North Main was the site of the famous Old Drum trial (Burden versus Hornsby). The courthouse's ground floor is arranged as it would have been in 1870 during the trial concerning Burden's beloved hunting dog, Old Drum. Visitors learn about the trial, the neighbors involved, and Senator George Graham Vest's famous "Tribute to the Dog" speech – explaining why Warrensburg is known as "Home of Man's Best Friend."
Mule Heritage
Warrensburg was considered Missouri's Mule Capital due to the Jones Brothers Horse and Mule Barn. Local mules won prizes at the Missouri State Fair and even at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Though no longer operational, visitors can still see the barn with its slogan, "Through these doors pass the best Mules on Earth." The mule later became the mascot for what is now the University of Central Missouri.
Community Landmarks
Near the historical complex on West Pine is Blind Boone Park, originally a segregated park for the Black community. It was restored through thousands of volunteer hours to honor J.W. "Blind" Boone, a beloved multi-ethnic community member who overcame physical and social challenges to become a renowned pianist.
Pertle Springs, owned by the University of Central Missouri, was once a thriving resort promoting its water as medicinal. The resort featured cabins, a dance hall, and a three-story hotel overlooking lakes. When the resort owner learned that a gathering of 20,000 people had selected his facility for their national convention, he addressed transportation needs by building the two-mile Warrensburg and Pertle Springs Railroad within a year.
