Resource and Treatment Information
The primary water source for MCWA is Lake Ontario, which is treated at both the Shoremont Plant in Greece and the Webster Plant in Webster. Additionally, we operate the Corfu Plant, a smaller groundwater supply facility in the Village of Corfu, and purchase supplemental water from the City of Rochester and Erie County Water Authority (ECWA).

The Distribution System Map in our annual report illustrates the typical service areas for each treatment plant. These boundaries adjust daily as we optimize water delivery to our customers. The New York State Health Department has evaluated water supply vulnerability statewide through the Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP).

Water Treatment Process
Our Lake Ontario plants and purchased water suppliers all utilize similar treatment methods: coagulation, filtration, and disinfection. Coagulants bind suspended particles together for more effective removal during filtration. Chlorine disinfects the water and maintains sanitary quality as it travels through our distribution system. We also add fluoride to promote dental health.

The Corfu Water Plant's process includes filtration, softening, and chlorine disinfection. All our facilities fully comply with New York State and EPA operational standards.

Our Commitment
As the third largest water supplier in New York State, the Monroe County Water Authority delivers approximately 20 billion gallons of water annually. Established in 1950 as a public benefit corporation, our sole purpose is providing quality water at reasonable rates.

Unlike some communities that struggle with water system maintenance, MCWA invested $14 million in infrastructure improvements in 2017. Our dedication to efficiency and cost control keeps our rates below the national average and in the lowest 25% for Northeast suppliers. A typical residential customer pays about $26 monthly for their water needs.

1. What CAN be recycled? Chipboard & Boxboard, Paper Bags, Paperback & Phone Books, Catalogs & Magazines, Junk Mail (anything that tears), Newspapers, Cardboard, Cartonboard (including cereal boxes and shoe boxes), Frozen Food Packages, Dairy & Juice Containers, Office and School Paper, Plastic Bottles and Containers (Recycle Codes 1-7, typically marked on the bottom), Aluminum Cans, Tin Cans, Steel and Bi-Metal Cans, Jar Lids, Plastic Clothes Hangers, Bottle Caps, Yogurt Containers, and Fast Food Drink Lids.
2. What CAN NOT be recycled? Construction & Demolition Materials, Large Automotive Parts, Tires, White Goods, Freon-containing Appliances, Medical Wastes, Hazardous Wastes (Automotive Fluids, Garden Chemicals, Paint Products, Cleaners, etc.), Electronics, Materials from Floods, Fires or Evictions, Glass, Plastic Bags (grocery bags, cereal liners, garbage bags, etc.), Styrofoam, Hardcover Books, Photos, Tissue Paper, Hand Towels and Toilet Paper.
3. Who owns the recycling cart? Waste Management owns the cart. If a homeowner moves, the cart stays at the residence or Waste Management retrieves it. If the town terminates recycling service or changes providers, Waste Management would collect all carts.
4. How do I get a PIN number? Spring Hill residents should receive an educational mailer containing their PIN number. You can also obtain a PIN online at Recyclebank or by calling 1-888-727-2978.
5. How do I get a recycling cart? If you didn't receive a recycling cart, request one by calling Waste Management at 1-800-607-9509.
6. If I want my recycling cart picked up, who do I call? To have your recycling cart removed, call Waste Management at 1-800-607-9509. Note that you'll still be billed $3.58 monthly on your water bill regardless of participation.
