New York Water Utility Companies

The Village of Rockville Centre is committed to providing residents with high-quality water that meets federal, state, and county regulations. Our water quality generally complies with all requirements except for iron levels, which pose no health risks but may cause aesthetic concerns.

Our Mayor, Board of Trustees, and staff are dedicated to delivering safe, reliable water to all families in our community. We constantly work to improve our treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources.

Water sources including tap water and bottled water originate from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels through the ground or over land surfaces, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and may pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.

Potential contaminants in source water include microbiological contaminants, inorganic compounds, pesticides, herbicides, organic chemicals, and radioactive substances. To ensure safety, state and EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems, similar to FDA regulations for bottled water.

The Magothy aquifer serves as the sole water source for approximately 24,700 Rockville Centre residents. Our system draws from 10 wells drilled to an average depth of 540 feet. Water is stored in four elevated tanks with a combined 4-million-gallon capacity and distributed through over 70 miles of water mains. In 2017, we withdrew 1.28 billion gallons from the aquifer, with about 92% directly billed to consumers.

The Village treats all well water before distribution. We adjust pH levels with lime or sodium hydroxide to reduce corrosion in water mains and home plumbing. Small amounts of chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) are added for disinfection purposes. We're currently planning a new iron removal facility to improve water quality for all residents. Additionally, we use an iron sequestering agent to minimize staining of laundry and plumbing fixtures.

By state regulations, we routinely monitor for numerous parameters including coliform bacteria, turbidity, inorganic compounds, lead, copper, nitrate, volatile organic compounds, trihalomethanes, and synthetic organic compounds. We test over 135 individual parameters in our wells multiple times yearly.
