The area now known as Dunkirk was first settled in the early 1800s, with the Village of Dunkirk officially incorporated in 1837. By February 1880, the growing settlement achieved city status as Dunkirk, NY. Before European settlement, the dense forests surrounding what would later be called Chadwick Bay served as hunting grounds for indigenous peoples.
By the mid-1600s, European explorers navigating Lake Erie's shoreline discovered the natural harbor, using it as shelter during harsh storms. In 1809, Solomon Chadwick cleared land around the bay that would later bear his name and established a homestead on the harbor shores.
By the 1830s, approximately 300 residents called the area home, leading to village incorporation on May 5, 1837. The following decades brought unprecedented growth with the arrival of railroads. Dunkirk's strategic location facilitated easy transfer of goods between rail and sea transport, and the city became renowned for train production.
By 1880, the population exceeded 7,000, prompting the state to charter Dunkirk as its newest city. Over the past 140 years, Dunkirk has transformed from a vital railroad junction to a thriving steel town, and now exists as the charming lakeside community residents enjoy today.

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Dunkirk City and Area Municipal Water Company and CDC- How does my trash collection work? Republic will empty your cart using vehicles equipped with an articulating arm. This arm securely grips and quickly empties the cart into the truck before returning it to its original position. This method is more efficient and safer than traditional manual collection approaches.
- What items can I place in my trash cart? The cart is designed to hold up to 175 pounds. You can dispose of all household trash and yard waste in your cart. Please bag loose items to prevent littering, especially during windy conditions. EVERYTHING must fit inside with the lid closed to prevent spillage. For safety and health reasons, certain items cannot be collected.
- Where should I position multiple carts? Ensure each cart has at least three feet clearance from mailboxes, vehicles, utility meters, etc., with the handle facing your house. For recycling service, maintain three feet between trash and recycling carts.
- How can I request an additional trash cart? If you consistently generate more trash than fits in your current cart, contact City of Sachse at 469-429-4763 to order an additional one. A monthly fee applies for each extra cart.
- Who handles maintenance requests? Contact Republic Services Customer Service at (972) 422-2341 or visit Republic Services DFW website for maintenance needs.
- What about items too large for my cart? Republic collects bulk/brush items monthly, with a 12 cubic yard limit (6' x 6' x 9'). Brush should be cut to 4-foot lengths and bundled or neatly stacked. Home-generated construction debris is also collected. No loose materials like tile will be collected unless properly contained and weighing under 50 pounds each.
- What about appliance disposal? EPA regulations prohibit disposal of appliances containing refrigerant. Residents must have refrigerant professionally removed and tagged by certified technicians.
- What if I can't wait for monthly bulk pickup? Call Republic Customer Service at (972) 422-2341 to schedule a special pickup within 5 days, for an additional fee payable in advance. Note: As a Sachse resident, you have free access to the C.M. Hinton, Jr. Regional Landfill at 3175 Elm Grove Road in Garland.

- How are holiday collection schedules handled? Republic Services observes: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Collection following a holiday is delayed by one day for the remainder of that week, concluding on Saturday.
