Endicott Municipal Water Works

The water supply in Endicott comes primarily from an underground aquifer accessed through several wells along the Susquehanna River. Most water supplies, whether from taps or bottles, originate from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells.

As water travels over land surfaces or through underground layers, it naturally dissolves minerals and can pick up substances from wildlife or human activities. Potential contaminants in source water include microbial agents, inorganic compounds, pesticides, herbicides, organic chemicals, and radioactive materials.

The Endicott Municipal Water Works is responsible for providing safe, clean water free from objectionable taste, odor, and turbidity. Their system includes:

• Approximately 168 miles of water mains
• 13 storage tanks with 10 million gallon capacity
• 950 fire hydrants for community protection
• 10 booster pump stations serving 5 pressure zones

In 2017, the utility pumped 1.7 billion gallons of water (averaging 4.6 million gallons daily). The Ranney Well (#32), a 110-foot deep groundwater collection well, supplies a significant portion of the community's water. This well features aeration towers capable of removing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and radon if needed.

To ensure tap water safety, both state regulations and EPA guidelines establish limits on contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, the State Health Department and FDA regulations set limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.
