WA of Great Neck North Municipal Water Report Info

The Water Authority of Great Neck North was established in 1985 as a public benefit corporation under Title 8-B, Section 1197 of the Public Authorities Law of New York State. In December 1989, the Authority acquired the assets of Citizens Water Supply Company, a private for-profit enterprise.

This transition to public ownership resulted from years of careful analysis by dedicated local officials. Since its creation, the Authority has been mandated to supply potable water to northern areas of the Great Neck Peninsula, including the villages of Great Neck, Great Neck Estates, Kensington, Kings Point, Saddle Rock, portions of Great Neck Plaza and Thomaston, as well as unincorporated sections of North Hempstead.

As a corporate governmental agency and public benefit corporation, all revenue must be directed toward operations, infrastructure improvements, and debt servicing. The Authority exclusively serves approximately 32,400 residents, providing reliable service 24/7, 365 days annually.

FACTS ABOUT THE WATER AUTHORITY

Board of Directors: Comprised of appointed representatives from the seven villages and Town of North Hempstead within the service area, primarily covering the northern section of Great Neck peninsula above the Long Island Railroad tracks.

Location: Administrative offices are situated at 50 Watermill Lane, Great Neck, NY 11021, on the western side of the peninsula. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Board Meetings: Regularly scheduled on the third Monday of each month at the Authority headquarters. For schedule confirmation, interested parties should call (516) 487-7973, extension 12.

Management: The water system is operated under Superintendent Gregory C. Graziano, who can be reached at (516) 487-7973, extension 12, for any questions or concerns about water supply.

Regulatory Oversight: The Nassau County Department of Health provides oversight from their offices at 240 Old Country Road, Mineola, NY 11501-4250. Representatives can be contacted at (516) 571-2260 or (516) 571-3323.

System Infrastructure: The Authority maintains over 117 miles of water mains ranging from 1-inch to 24-inches in diameter. Most mains are constructed of ductile or cast iron, with others made of wrought iron, transite, steel, copper, or PVC. All services within the area are metered, and the system maintains interconnection with an adjacent water supplier.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I pay my water/sanitation bill?

OFFICE PAYMENTS: Cash, check, or money order accepted in person or by mail. After hours, use the Payment Drop Box outside the Water and Sanitation Division office.

ELECTRONIC PAYMENTS: Set up through your personal online banking system. Contact your banking institution with questions about this method.

CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS: Accepted in-office with no convenience fees (except American Express). Phone/online payments through "Official Payments Corporation" include a $2.95 convenience fee per transaction.

  2. Is my water safe to drink?

To ensure County Service Area water systems meet strict standards set by the USEPA and California Water Resources Control Board, water samples are regularly collected throughout the distribution system and tested by independent state-certified laboratories to confirm compliance with all standards.

  3. What should I do if I encounter a snake while hiking?

DON'T PANIC. Snake encounters are common on trails, particularly in rocky areas or tall grass. Remember:

    • Snakes are rarely aggressive unless threatened
    • Don't attempt to handle or frighten them with rocks/sticks
    • Back away slowly to avoid being perceived as a threat

If bitten: Stay calm, keep the bite site below heart level, apply loose bandage above the wound, don't clean the wound, and seek medical attention immediately.

  4. I think my meter is reading incorrectly. Can I get it tested?

The Division installs Sensus IPERL water meters that comply with ANSI/AWWA C700 standards. Certified testers use equipment verified by the Department of Weights and Measures. Contact our office to schedule a calibration test if you believe your meter is registering inaccurately.

  5. When is the Preserve open and when are there closures?

The North Etiwanda Preserve, a habitat conservation site, is open from dawn until sunset for hiking only. Nighttime closure allows wildlife to recover from human interaction. Hiking at night is dangerous and violators may receive citations.
