About Us
The Village of Newark utilizes Canandaigua Lake as its primary water source. The New York State Division of Health completed a Resource Water Assessment of the lake, finding moderate susceptibility to contamination. The agricultural areas surrounding the water source present elevated risks of protozoa, phosphorous, DBP precursors, and pesticide contamination.
Despite average density of sanitary wastewater discharges, the volume released into surface water is significant enough to raise concerns about potential contaminants, particularly protozoa. No major contamination threats are associated with other discrete sources.
Canandaigua Lake spans approximately 16.4 square miles with a watershed area of 174 square miles. The Village is permitted to draw up to 4 million gallons daily for its treatment plant located in Shortsville, New York. As water enters the intake line, chlorine is added to control zebra mussel growth, which can clog pipes through rapid multiplication.
At the treatment facility, all water undergoes filtration through multiple systems: Slow Sand Filtration, Diatomaceous Earth Pressure Filtration, and/or Diatomaceous Earth Vacuum Filtration. The plant houses four Slow Sand filters and three D.E. filters with a combined capacity of 3.4 million gallons daily.
After filtration, approximately 1.8 parts per million of chlorine is added for disinfection. Combined Phosphate is introduced at 0.96 parts per million to create a protective film against corrosion in the distribution system. Fluoride is added at 0.7 parts per million, following New York State Department of Health recommendations.
From the Filter Plant, water flows through a 20" pipeline to a junction near Rt. 96 and County Rd. 6, where it divides into two 16" pipelines. One carries water north by gravity to the four-million-gallon Allerton Hill Reservoir. The other flows east to connect with a 14" transmission line that serves the Village and surrounding communities.
The Village maintains an emergency well source on Siegrist Road capable of supplying 1 million gallons daily if the Canandaigua Lake source becomes unavailable. This well water is of good quality except for its hardness level of approximately 25.3 grains per gallon.
In accordance with Safe Drinking Water Act requirements, Newark Village routinely monitors water for numerous contaminants including inorganic substances, nitrates, lead, copper, volatile organics, synthetic organics, and trihalomethanes. The water is tested for coliform bacteria at least ten times monthly, with any detected contaminants listed in the Table of Detected Contaminants provided in the annual report.

Newark, New York is situated in the Town of Arcadia, established in 1819 and incorporated on July 21, 1853. The village celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2003. While early settlement began in the 1790s, the development of modern Newark can be directly attributed to the construction of the Erie Canal, often called "the digging of a ditch" – a visionary project championed by NY Governor DeWitt Clinton.
The Erie Canal took eight years to complete, and on October 26, 1825, the canal towns of Miller's Basin and Lockville celebrated the "Wedding of the Waters" and the Grand Opening. News of the opening traveled from Buffalo to New York City in just 81 minutes via cannon relay. Most construction workers remained in the area after completion, finding abundant employment opportunities within a year.
The strategic location along both the canal and the New York Central railroad positioned shipping activities conveniently for these communities, stimulating industrial growth. Economic prosperity followed, with jobs plentiful and even farmers from the NYC area migrating to the region attracted by rich soil and productive farmland. In 1853, the communities formerly known as Miller's Basin and Lockville merged to form present-day Newark, New York.
