About Us
Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled varieties) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can absorb substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial Contaminants - viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic Pollutants - salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and Herbicides - from various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic Chemical Contaminants - including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive Contaminants - naturally-occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining activities
A Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP) is available at our office. This assessment evaluates the delineated area around our listed sources through which contaminants could potentially move and reach our water supply. It includes an inventory of potential contamination sources and determines our system's vulnerability. According to this assessment, our water system has a susceptibility rating of 'MEDIUM'.
To ensure tap water safety, EPA establishes regulations limiting certain contaminants in public water systems. FDA regulations set similar limits for bottled water to provide equal public health protection.
We want our valued customers to be informed about their water utility. For questions about this report, to attend scheduled meetings, or to learn more about your water, please contact FRANK GRIZZAFFI at 985-385-1770.
Regarding lead concerns: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While MORGAN CITY WATER SYSTEM provides quality water, we cannot control the components used in plumbing fixtures. If your water has been sitting for several hours, minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned, you may have your water tested. Information about lead in water, testing methods, and minimizing exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals - Office of Public Health routinely monitors constituents in your water according to Federal and State laws. The MORGAN CITY WATER SYSTEM team works around the clock to provide quality water to every tap. We ask all customers to help us protect our water resources, which are vital to our community, lifestyle, and children's future.
