About Us
We are pleased to present you with the Annual Water Quality Report for 2017. This document aims to inform you about your water quality and the services we deliver daily (Este informe contiene informacion muy importante sabre su agua potable. Traduzcalo o hable con alguien que lo entienda bien).
Our primary goal is to provide you with safe, reliable municipal water. We want you to understand our ongoing efforts to improve water treatment processes and protect our valuable water resources. We remain committed to ensuring your water quality.
Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves across land or through soil, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial Contaminants - viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic Contaminants - salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and Herbicides - from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
- Organic Chemical Contaminants - synthetic and volatile organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive Contaminants - naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
A Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP) is available at our office. This plan evaluates the area around our water sources where contaminants could potentially migrate into our supply. It includes an inventory of potential contamination sources and assesses vulnerability. According to the SWAP, our water system has a "MEDIUM" susceptibility rating. To review the Source Water Assessment Plan, please contact our office.
EPA regulations limit contaminants in public water systems to ensure tap water safety. FDA regulations establish similar limits for bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection.
If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in municipal water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While Tangipahoa Parish Water District provides quality water, we cannot control the materials used in plumbing components. To minimize potential lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. For concerns about lead, consider water testing. Information on lead in municipal water, testing methods, and exposure reduction is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.Epa.Gov/safewater/lead.
The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals routinely monitors your municipal water for contaminants according to Federal and State laws. Municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
