Pawc Pocono District Municipal Water Report Info

Pocono Township was established as a separate Township through a declaration from Northampton County courts in November 1816. The township borders Tunkhannock and Tobyhanna Townships to the north, Coolbaugh and Paradise Townships to the east, and Jackson Township to the west. The name derives from the mountains stretching across the region.

Spanning 35 square miles, Pocono Township's population has grown significantly over the decades. From just 564 residents in 1830, it increased to 973 by 1840, reached 5,772 by 1980, expanded to 7,550 in 1990, and grew to approximately 9,606 by 2000. Current estimates suggest the population now exceeds 10,000 residents.

Tannersville, where the local government facilities are located, was established around 1750 by John Larner, formerly from Philadelphia. According to historical records, Tannersville was originally known as Pocono Point. Many Native American trails were later widened for stagecoach travel and eventually developed into highways. Two of the most notable routes include the Lackawanna Trail (now Route 611 through Tannersville) and Sullivan's Trail.

Learneds Tavern (which burned down in 2000, now the site of CVS Pharmacy) was established along the Lackawanna Trail and in 1779 marked the last structure on the frontier. On June 18, 1779, General Sullivan and his officers camped at Learneds Tavern. A monument commemorating the historic tavern site can still be seen beside the CVS Pharmacy parking area.
