The municipal water supplied to our customers meets rigorous quality standards. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) requires all water utilities to publish an annual "Consumer Confidence" report for transparency. This is our twentieth report designed to enhance public awareness about water quality and our ongoing efforts to ensure safe municipal water.
Our report details the source of your water, its composition, and how it compares to federal regulatory standards. YOUR WATER IS SAFE TO DRINK
The Pawtucket Water Supply Board (PWSB) ensures water safety through comprehensive monitoring and testing. Our Water Quality Laboratory works alongside the RI Department of Health (RIDOH) to thoroughly monitor water before and after treatment, as well as after it travels through distribution mains to your home.
Numerous federal and state regulations govern water quality, specifying what, when, and why samples must be collected. These regulations establish monitoring requirements and contaminant limits. Currently, PWSB monitors over 70 regulated and 30 unregulated contaminants, with RIDOH support testing for more than 170 different substances. Testing occurs daily, monthly, quarterly, or annually as required.
The water delivered to customers undergoes daily monitoring for turbidity, pH, color, odor, fluoride, and bacteriological contamination. Our Water Quality Laboratory collects over 20 samples daily, totaling approximately 600 samples monthly. This frequent sampling exceeds federal and state requirements, ensuring the water we provide is consistently safe for consumption.

Pawtucket is a historic city of 71,148 residents founded in 1671, situated at the strategic falls of the Blackstone River and upper tidewaters of Narragansett Bay. The city holds a special place in American industrial history as the site where Samuel Slater successfully built and operated cotton spinning machines in 1793 at the Slater Mill Historic Site.
Alongside textiles, various machine and ironworking operations developed in the area. While Pawtucket's industrial landscape evolved over the following century, making it a significant manufacturing center. Though textiles are no longer the dominant industry, some specialty textile operations remain, producing products like lace, non-woven, and elastic woven materials.
Today, Pawtucket hosts 300 diverse industries with jewelry, silverware, metals, and textiles representing the three largest sectors. Recent decades have seen concentrated efforts to diversify Rhode Island's economy, with Pawtucket actively participating in this transition.
The city implemented important political reforms prior to physical transformations. A home rule charter became effective in 1954, establishing a strong mayoral and unicameral City Council government structure with professional officials and staff. Since 1956, Pawtucket has led community development initiatives while modernizing facilities and services.
