Lincoln Water Commission Municipal Water Company and EPALincoln Water Commission Municipal Water Report Info
The Lincoln Water Commission was established in 1955 through an act of the General Assembly, becoming a Quasi-Municipal agency responsible for constructing and operating a public water system for Lincoln. Prior to this, three separate water systems served different parts of town: Woonsocket, Pawtucket, and Cumberland. Inadequate fire protection from these systems and several major industrial fires highlighted the need for a comprehensive water system.
The commission acquired existing water lines from neighboring municipalities and built transmission mains, storage facilities, and wells to create an independent system that eventually expanded townwide. In 1985, Lincoln connected to the Providence water system for its primary supply after well contamination issues arose, discontinuing use of its own wells.
Today, after decades of expansion, Lincoln's water system includes approximately 133 miles of water mains up to 24" in diameter serving the entire town. The commission operates four main pumping stations and one well pumping station, with capability to draw supplemental water from Woonsocket when needed.
