A Source Water Assessment Package (SWAP) is available for review at our local offices. This assessment outlines the delineated area surrounding our water sources where potential contamination could migrate and reach our water supply.

The package includes an inventory of potential contamination sources within the delineated area and an evaluation of the water supply's vulnerability to these identified sources. According to the Source Water Assessment Plan, our water systems received a specific susceptibility rating.

We welcome you to review the Source Water Assessment Program during regular business hours. Please contact our office to arrange a time.

Regarding bacteria in water: Bacteria play a vital role in our ecosystem, with approximately 45 trillion bacteria living in each person. Without these microorganisms, maintaining healthy lives would be impossible. While coliform bacteria commonly exist in the environment and are generally harmless, their presence in water is concerning as it may indicate contamination with disease-causing organisms.

In 2016, the U.S. EPA implemented new regulations called the Revised Total Coliform Rule, requiring additional measures for water systems to ensure distribution system integrity through monitoring for bacteria like total coliform and E. coli. This updated rule establishes more stringent standards than previous regulations and requires susceptible water systems to implement procedures that reduce contamination risks.

Water systems exceeding certain thresholds of total coliform occurrences must evaluate their systems and promptly address any issues. The EPA anticipates enhanced public health protection under this proactive approach to identifying and resolving potential problems affecting public health.

While we're fortunate to have high-quality water, our goal remains eliminating all potential contamination pathways into our distribution system, and this new rule supports that objective.

Local water utilities must follow strict testing protocols and reporting requirements established by the EPA. These guidelines help protect consumers from potential health risks associated with water contamination.

Annual water quality reports provide transparency about what's in your tap water and how it compares to federal standards. Understanding these reports helps residents make informed decisions about water filtration needs.
