Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

New Jersey CDC Tap Water Info

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:

Pennsville Twsp. Water Depart. Municipal Water Company and CDC
  1. Is Little Thompson Water District's tap water safe to drink?
Yes, our water exceeds all regulatory requirements and has never violated any standard. Municipal water is regulated by both the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency.
  2. Where does our water come from?
The District's raw water (untreated) primarily comes from Carter Lake, a reservoir within Northern Water's Colorado-Big Thompson Project (C-BT). This water is collected from western slope reservoirs and transported through the Alva B. Adams Tunnel to various lakes and reservoirs before reaching Carter Lake.
  3. Is the water protected from contamination?
The District participates in the Big Thompson Watershed Forum, a coalition of citizens and government agencies dedicated to protecting water quality throughout the watershed, including Carter Lake. The Forum partners with Colorado State University and Northern Water Conservancy District to maintain a comprehensive water quality monitoring network. Learn more at www.btwatershed.org.
  4. What causes unusual odors or tastes in my water?
Water can acquire tastes and odors from new pipes, low usage in the distribution system, or natural elements in the source water. Seasonal algae or aquatic plant blooms can cause temporary taste and odor issues. While treatment removes the organisms, some odors may persist. These taste and odor changes aren't harmful, and we work to minimize them.
  5. Why is my water sometimes discolored?
Discoloration typically comes from rust in aging pipes. While unappealing, it's generally not harmful. Other causes include water line disturbances from hydrant use, new pipe installation, or system maintenance. Home plumbing can also contribute to discoloration.

Additional Water Quality Information:
Water filters are generally unnecessary for our municipal water, which meets all safety standards. However, if your home has lead service lines or lead-containing plumbing components, you might consider a filter. Many bottled water companies actually use municipal tap water as their source, and bottled water isn't as thoroughly regulated or tested as municipal water.

Water Chemistry:
Our water is classified as soft, with an average hardness of approximately 27.50 mg/L (measured June 2017). The water hardness scale ranges from 0-60 mg/L (soft) to over 180 mg/L (very hard).
