About Us
In 2017, the Middlesex system produced 14.4 billion gallons of water for its customers. Our operation utilizes both surface and groundwater sources throughout the year, with residents receiving either source or a blend depending on location and seasonal demand.
Surface water comes primarily from the Delaware and Raritan Canal (D&R Canal), which is state-owned and managed by the New Jersey Hydrant Authority. This primary source is supplemented by the Circular Valley and Jazz Run Reservoir Systems. Together, surface water provides approximately 74% of our total supply. The remaining water comes from our groundwater wells (19%) and purchased water (7%) from New Jersey American Water-Raritan System.
Our groundwater is sourced from 31 wells located at the Park Avenue and Spring Lake Wellfields in South Plainfield and the Tingley Lane Wellfields in North Edison. In 2017, these wells produced approximately 2.8 billion gallons from the Brunswick Aquifer. Water quality monitoring occurs continuously at our treatment plant, wellfields, and throughout the distribution system to ensure compliance with all federal and state standards.
During water emergencies, we may adjust supply from any of our sources. Depending on your residence location, you may receive all surface water, all groundwater, or a combination of both sources.
