Where Does Your Water Come From?
The ACMUA's water system includes both surface and groundwater sources, a water purification facility, transmission infrastructure to Ocean City, city-wide distribution services, surface water reservoirs, one standpipe, two elevated storage tanks, and one aquifer storage recharge (ASR) well. In 2017, we processed 3,031.7980 million gallons of water, with a peak daily demand of 11.2500 million gallons in July and an average daily usage of approximately 8.3003 million gallons.

Our water sources include two surface reservoirs (Kuehnle Pond Atteinte and Doughty Pond Dam) and 13 wells. Eleven wells tap the Cohansey Aquifer while two access the Kirkwood Aquifer. Collected well water is transported to our Treatment Plant Facility where it undergoes comprehensive treatment including pretreatment with sodium hypochlorite for disinfection, sodium permanganate and poly aluminum chloride for turbidity removal, followed by aeration, mixing, settling, and filtration through mixed media (sand, stones, and granular activated carbon). Post-treatment includes disinfection, pH adjustment with lime, fluoride addition, and corrosion inhibitor application. The treated water then travels through two large transmission mains to serve all Atlantic City customers.
