About Us
The Marlboro Township Water Utility provides customers with water from two distinct sources. Approximately 75% is purchased from Middlesex Water Company (MWC), a seasoned water purveyor with over a century of experience in collection, treatment, and distribution. MWC supplies Marlboro with surface water from the Delaware and Raritan Canal, supplemented by the Jazz Run and Circular Valley Reservoirs operated by the New Jersey Water Supply Authority.
Water is extracted from the Canal at a New Brunswick intake facility and transported to MWC's Edison plant for processing. The treated water then travels to the Water Utility through MWC's South River Basin Pipeline System.
The second water source comes from the Water System's groundwater supplies. This water is drawn from 700-foot deep wells in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy Aquifer to treatment facilities on Harbor Road and Tennent Road. Harbor Road employs an Ion Exchange process, while Tennent Road utilizes a dual filter press Direct Filtration method. The treated water reaches customers via an extensive network of underground water mains and service connections.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has completed Source Water Assessment Statements for public water systems, available at www.nj.gov/dep/watersupply/swap/index.html or by contacting the NJDEP Bureau of Safe Drinking Water at (609) 292-5550.
A water system's susceptibility rating (Low, Moderate, or High) combines two factors:
- The water source's sensitivity to contamination (shallow wells or surface reservoirs are more exposed than deep wells)
- The frequency of contaminant presence or nearby activities like industry or agriculture ("intensity of use")
Ratings indicate potential for a contaminant to be: (i) at or above 50% of the Maximum Contaminant Level (High); (ii) between 10% and 50% of the MCL (Medium); or (iii) below 10% of the MCL (Low).
A high vulnerability rating doesn't necessarily mean customers consume contaminated water. It indicates potential source water contamination risk, not actual contamination. Public water systems must monitor regulated contaminants and implement treatment if any exceed permitted levels.
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants—may face higher infection risks. These individuals should consult their physicians about drinking water safety. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing cryptosporidium infection risk are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
