New Jersey Water Utility Companies

The Water Utility operates as a division of our municipal government. The Mayor and Municipal Council serve as the Board of Directors for the Water Utility and, in accordance with State Law, the Utility collaborates with other municipal services to achieve cost efficiencies. The Utility maintains financial independence, with revenues from over 18,600 customers covering operational expenses, debt service, and necessary reserves.

As a public provider of potable water, we must comply with Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) requirements. These mandates specify certain tests that must be performed and reported annually through our Consumer Confidence Report, which we call "Quality on Tap." This report helps residents understand their water's source, treatment processes, and delivery systems.

Beyond meeting minimum testing requirements, East Brunswick's report includes comprehensive data through 2016. The Mayor, Municipal Council, and citizen Water Policy Advisory Committee, together with utility staff, are committed to delivering the safest and most reliable water supply possible. We firmly believe that informed customers are our best partners in maintaining safe drinking water.

East Brunswick Water Utility Municipal Water Report Information

The Consumer Confidence Report provides essential data about water sources and any identified contaminants, along with compliance and educational information. These reports are made available to customers by July 1st each year.

The Water Utility functions as a municipal government subdivision. The Mayor and Municipal Council act as the Board of Directors and collaborate with other municipal services for economic efficiency. Operating independently, the Utility's revenues from over 17,600 customers cover operational costs, debt service, and required reserves.

Capital Expansion
To ensure adequate fire flow and water quality, capital improvements are added to the system annually. In 2007, a new pump and natural gas engine was installed to increase water flow and reduce operational costs, providing residents with a three-day water supply in case of service disruption. We continue replacing smaller, older water lines with new ductile iron pipes. These projects are funded through the Utility's rate structure, which remains the lowest water rate-based system in the Raritan Basin.

Water Source
East Brunswick is located in the Raritan River Water Basin, though our raw water originates elsewhere. We receive water from the New Jersey Water Supply Authority, which operates the Spruce Run/Round Valley Reservoir System in Hunterdon County and the Delaware and Raritan Canal Systems. The Delaware and Raritan Canal System's headwaters come from the Delaware River Basin, a 13,500 square mile watershed spanning Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. This system supplies approximately 18 million people, including over half of New York City.

The region receives over 40 inches of rain annually, with much stored in reservoirs and channeled through the Delaware Raritan Canal. Water flows are regulated by the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC), established by a 1961 Compact following a 1954 U.S. Supreme Court Decree that allocated water to various states and mandated specific releases from New York reservoirs to maintain Delaware River flow levels. Up to 100 million gallons daily are transferred from the Delaware River through the D&R Canal, where East Brunswick draws its supply.
