The Nutley Water Department operates as a self-sufficient division within the Department of Public Works, funded entirely through service revenues rather than tax dollars. The department primarily obtains its potable water from the Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) via their Little Falls Water Treatment Plant in Totowa, NJ.
Water is sourced from the Passaic and Pompton Rivers, then undergoes treatment, filtration, and sanitization at the plant. During drought conditions or emergencies, the Point View Reservoir in Wayne, NJ serves as a supplementary source. After processing, the water is combined with treated water from the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission's Wanaque Reservoir treatment facility at PVWC's main pumping station.
This blended water travels through underground transmission lines into Nutley, where four intake pit zones distribute it throughout the township. These intake points are located at Coeyman Avenue, Ridge Road, Center Street, and Meacham Avenue. A small section of western Nutley receives water from the City of Newark's Pequannock Reservoir supply.
The Nutley Water Department is classified as a public community water system and purchases water from: Passaic Valley Water Commission (PWSID # NJ1605002), North Jersey District Water Supply Commission - Wanaque North System (PWSID # NJ1613001), Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (PWSID # NJ090600), and Newark Water Department (PWSID # NJ0714001).
