About Riverton's Government: Riverton, Utah operates as a "six-part committee" government type as defined by Utah State Code. The city is classified as third class under state regulations. The governing structure consists of six elected officials: a mayor and five council members.
The city council holds authority to enact ordinances, pass resolutions, approve annual budgets, oversee zoning regulations, establish city fees, develop long-term infrastructure plans, and set standards for municipal services. As outlined in Utah Code § 10-3b-301, this governing body manages all aspects of city operations.
The mayor serves as both council chair and city CEO, casting votes when necessary to break ties among council members (when one member is absent), and when deciding on city manager appointment/removal or modifications to mayoral powers (Utah Code § 10-3b-302).
On December 6, 2011, Riverton City Council reorganized its municipal ordinances and reaffirmed the city manager position. This professional, full-time manager oversees daily operations, supervises all departments, and reports directly to the mayor and council.
Council meetings occur at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays monthly, though schedules occasionally change. During these sessions, the council conducts business through motions, ordinances, and resolutions. Residents may address the council during open comment periods at the beginning of each meeting.
Council members serve four-year staggered terms, with only three positions expiring simultaneously. Municipal elections take place in odd-numbered years during general elections on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
