About Us
How Safe Is My Municipal Water? Schererville Water Department is proud to share this comprehensive water quality report with our customers. This document outlines the quality of your tap water for the period of January 1 through December 31, 2017.
We're pleased to report that Schererville Water Department's municipal water supply met or exceeded all strict regulations set by both Indiana State authorities and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In 2017, our facility distributed over 1.2 billion gallons of water to our community.
Our water supply comes from pre-treated Lake Michigan water purchased from Indiana-American Water Company. They utilize chloramines in their treatment process to protect consumers from microbial contamination. Chloramines, a combination of chlorine and a small amount of ammonia, have been safely used for decades across the United States and offer more stable disinfection than chlorine alone. Many consumers also prefer the taste of chloramine-treated water as it lacks the distinct chlorine flavor.
It's important to note that while chloramines are safe for general consumption, they must be removed before water is used in kidney dialysis machines or aquariums, as they can be harmful when introduced directly into the bloodstream.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has developed a comprehensive assessment plan for all public water systems throughout the state, identifying potential contamination sources. If you have concerns about environmental water quality, please contact our dedicated water quality specialist listed in this report.
Potential contaminants in source water may include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals, either naturally occurring or from urban runoff, industrial discharge, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agricultural, urban, or residential sources
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, or septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil and gas production and mining
Certain individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants could face increased health risks. These individuals should seek advice about municipal water consumption from their healthcare providers. For CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks, call the Safe Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
