Often called America's junction due to its strategic location along Interstate 80/94, the Indiana Toll Road, I65 and Lake Michigan, Lake Station serves approximately 14,000 residents in a diverse community. The area's rich South Shore heritage dates back to the Treaty of Tippecanoe in the early 1800s.
During that period, several communities competed to establish prominence on Lake Michigan's South Shore—including Chicago, Michigan City, City West (now Indiana Dunes area), Indiana City (Miller Beach area), and Liverpool (present-day Lake Station). Liverpool initially became the County seat because of its advantageous access to both the Little Calumet and Deep Rivers, which were navigable and commercially viable at that time.
By 1840, Lake County residents petitioned for a more centrally located county seat, claiming Liverpool was too far east. They selected Lake Court House, later renamed Crown Point. Throughout its history, Lake Station has maintained its strategic position near transportation hubs and highway networks, positioning it for continued growth and innovation.
In recent years, improvements to housing, infrastructure, and utilities have prepared the city for ongoing development while maintaining its historical significance and community values. The current administration welcomes visitors and potential partners with vision for economic growth that respects Lake Station's proud heritage as it enters its next phase of development.
